Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

Facelift surgery is a highly personalized procedure. This is an investment into yourself and should not be done to fit the standards or ideals of another’s.

Are you a good candidate for a facelift?

In general, good candidates for a facelift include:

  • Healthy individuals who do not have medical conditions that impair healing
  • Nonsmokers
  • Individuals with a positive outlook and realistic expectations

Is a facelift right for me?

Minimally invasive procedures such as injectable fillers and BOTOX® Cosmetic are popular options for patients who want a more youthful appearance, but they can’t match the long-lasting results achieved by a facelift, a mini-facelift, or a necklift. Dr. Higgins or Dr. Silver can help you determine which facial rejuvenation options will provide you with the most satisfying outcome.

Common concerns that can be alleviated by facelift surgery include:

  • Sagging along the jawline
  • Jowls
  • Neck excess and looseness
  • Skin redundancy

Facelift surgery is appropriate for many men and women who are bothered by symptoms of aging, especially in the lower two-thirds of the face, from below the eyelids to the neck. A facelift is commonly performed in conjunction with a blepharoplasty, which improves aging of the upper and lower eyelids, or with a brow lift, to elevate a sagging forehead. Patients may also choose non-surgical procedures such as fat transfer or fillers for volume enhancement.

It can all be a bit confusing, but our surgeons will thoroughly discuss your options at the time of your consultation. They also believe it’s helpful to consider a longer term rejuvenation plan.

Every time I would look at myself in the mirror I felt old and the thought of getting old and looking old scared the hell out of me, but after meeting with Dr. Silver he gave me so much more.I knew from the first time that I met him I would never let anyone else touch my face, I just knew he cared about his patients… Dr. Silver is an awesome doctor and anyone who decides to have anything done will not be disappointed. When I think about what both Dr. Silver and Stacie has given me, I get tears in my eyes. Dr. Silver and Stacie made me feel like a million bucks! I can never say enough about Dr. Silver or Stacie!

How is a facelift performed?

The details of your procedure depend on whether a full facelift, mini-facelift or a neck lift will be incorporated by our Las Vegas specialists.

Full Facelift

This is typically recommended if your face shows significant signs of aging in the cheeks and neck. Incisions begin in front of the ear and extend behind the ear. These are well disguised and vary in length depending on the extent of the surgery. The layers of deeper tissue beneath the skin — the SMAS — are tightened, and excess skin is removed. Sometimes a small incision is made under the chin to further tighten the neck muscles (platysma). Older techniques, which simply addressed the skin and not the SMAS, produced a pulled, unnatural appearance. During the procedure, liposuction of the neck, eyelid surgery, fat transfer and brow lift surgery can also be safely incorporated.

This focuses specifically on tightening laxity in the cheeks. It requires shorter incisions made in front of the ear. As in a full facelift, the skin is lifted, the SMAS is tightened, and excess skin is removed. Sometimes neck muscles are tightened through a small incision under the chin, and fat injections may be done around the mouth and cheeks. Eyelid surgery and brow lift are also commonly combined with a this procedure.

During this procedure, which is sometimes called a vertical cheek lift, tissues are lifted off the cheekbones and elevated, but no skin is removed. It involves incisions hidden in the hairline at the temples and either at the lower eyelid or in the mouth. This is a good option for younger patients with early signs of aging and mid-face descent.

“Don’t get confused by marketing catchphrases that refer to non-surgical facelifts, such as ‘liquid facelifts’ or ‘stem cell facelifts.’ Although those procedures might be worthwhile and have their place, they are not facelifts and cannot achieve similar results. A more sophisticated approach when considering fillers and volume versus a facelift is not to think of it as ‘either/or’, but to think which procedure is appropriate at this point.”

What can I expect during recovery?

Although your surgeon offers you a specific recuperation timeline during your consultation, most of our Las Vegas-area facelift patients have relatively comfortable and uneventful periods of recovery. We recommend a stay of 10-14 days for our out-of-town patients and will help make arrangements.

For the first few days after your surgery, you can manage any discomfort with prescribed or over-the-counter pain relievers. Swelling and bruising are usually maximum at 3 days and improve over the next few weeks. Most people feel well enough to work at 2 weeks, but still have cosmetic signs such as swelling and bruising that they would rather others not see.

During the recovery period, you will need to keep your head elevated in order to minimize swelling. Many patients opt to sleep in a recliner or propped up on a wedge or pillows. You will be encouraged to walk but must avoid heavy exercising to avoid delayed bruising and bleeding for 2-3 weeks. Sun protection is vital, especially for bruised skin and pink scars. To help yourself heal, don’t smoke and avoid secondhand smoke.

Keep in mind that these guidelines are typical for traditional facelift patients. If you’re undergoing a mini-facelift or necklift alone, your recuperation may be shorter. Undergoing multiple procedures may also influence recovery time.

After about 1 week, you’ll be scheduled for a follow-up appointment, during which most of your bandages and sutures are removed.
