Improve the Contours of Your Nose

Your nose is the focal point of your face. If you think your nose is too big or you’re self-conscious because it has a bump or is hooked, cosmetic surgery is an option. Rhinoplasty at our Las Vegas practice is performed by Dr. Terrence Higgins and Dr. Andrew Silver, who have advanced training in rhinoplasty. They combines an artist’s eye for proportion with the surgical technique necessary to complete a pleasing nose job.

Las Vegas men and women wanting rhinoplasty have been choosing Dr. Higgins or Dr. Silver for good reasons. Request a consultation to discuss your cosmetic goals, or call our office at 702-822-2100 to schedule an appointment.

Dr. Higgins and Dr. Silver perform rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of the nose as well as the patient’s breathing. Both concerns may be addressed during the same surgery.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty can enhance the appearance of the nose in many ways, including:

  • Decreasing or increasing the size of the nose or nostrils
  • Reshaping the tip of the nose
  • Sculpting the bridge of the nose to reduce a hump
  • Building up a flattened bridge

Functional rhinoplasty changes or removes internal obstructions that impair breathing through the nose.

Rhinoplasty is often combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures such as eyelid surgery, chin implants, and fat transfer for a more comprehensive improvement.

Rhinoplasty surgery is all about the slightest of changes, the smallest of chisels, with the most delicate details. With the contours of your nose, less is definitely more.

How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?

Rhinoplasty is done with either a closed or open technique. The primary difference between the 2 procedures is that open rhinoplasty allows the surgeon to view more of the nasal structure, which leads to greater surgical precision. The decision about which procedure is appropriate for you will be made during your consultation with Dr. Higgins or Dr. Silver.

Open Rhinoplasty

A small incision is made on the strip of skin — called the columella — separating the nostrils. The skin covering the nose is then lifted off the tip. Once the procedure is complete, the incision is sutured. This results in a tiny scar, which is usually unnoticeable. Most of the operation itself involves altering the size and shape of the bone and cartilage beneath the skin.

“When considering a rhinoplasty, I like to tell my patients that it takes very slight  adjustments and minor chiseling to refine your nose. The less we do, the better the results.”

– Dr. Andrew Silver

Rhinoplasty patients usually return home the day of surgery, and recovery is typically relatively comfortable and uneventful. We recommend a stay of 10 to 14 days for our out-of-town patients and will help make arrangements for lodging and assistance with care.

After rhinoplasty, your face may feel puffy, your nose may ache, and you may have a dull headache for the first 24 hours. Discomfort may be managed with prescription or over-the-counter pain medication. It is also helpful to apply cold compresses to your face.

Most patients feel ready to return to a non-strenuous job or school within about 1 to 2 weeks.

Enhance Your Recovery

We recommend the following precautions after rhinoplasty for optimal recovery:

  • Keep your head elevated at all times, even when sleeping, to minimize pain and swelling.
  • Do not blow your nose for 3 weeks.
  • Avoid strenuous activities for several weeks.
  • If you must wear glasses, keep them from resting on the bridge of your nose.
  • Stay out of direct sunlight and wear sunscreen when outdoors.

You will receive specific timelines for recovery during your consultation.

Your Results

Depending on the goals of your surgery, the improved appearance of your nose may be subtle or dramatic. It is common to simply want the nose to be in balance with the other facial features and not draw immediate attention. Most of the swelling, bruising, and firmness of your nose will dissipate within the first 2 to 3 weeks. Swelling can take the longest to resolve, so your final result may take a full year or more to achieve.
