Is a Breast Augmentation Right for Me?
If you've been thinking about breast augmentation, it's likely this is one of the first questions you asked yourself. During your consultation, a thorough physical examination will determine part of the answer. In addition to being in good overall health, women who are good candidates for breast augmentation also:
- Want larger breasts to balance their body proportions
- Feel that enhanced breasts will increase their confidence
- Wish to restore volume lost after pregnancy and breastfeeding
What Our Patients Are Saying
"Dr. Higgins, The new me feels overcome with joy every morning when I’m getting ready for the day. I knew you were good, but I didn’t know you worked miracles."
How Is My Breast Augmentation Personalized?
Once you've made the decision to have breast enhancement surgery, we will make other choices together during your consultation:
- Which procedure is best suited to your goals: breast augmentation, breast lift, or a combination of both procedures?
- Should your breast augmentation be performed using breast implants or fat transfer?
If you're having breast implants, there are a few more things to consider:
- Which type, size, and shape of breast implant is right for you?
- Which incision technique should be used?
- Where should the implants be placed, under or over the chest muscle?
Our doctors typically perform breast augmentation using implants because most women want more than just a minor increase in breast size. With more breast implant options available than ever before, our surgeons use their expertise to help patients navigate the range of choices. They also use VECTRA® 3D breast imaging to help patients envision how they might look with a variety of implants. Our surgeons listen closely to patients describe their aesthetic goals and recommend implants that will best suit a patient's physical characteristics and meet those goals. See our Breast Augmentation FAQ for details about breast implant options.
Breast Augmentation With Implants
Inserting breast implants is the most common approach to breast augmentation. Dr. Edwards and Dr. Higgins are breast surgery specialists with experience in augmentations using both saline and silicone implants, including the various cohesive gel products that are often referred to as "gummy bear" implants.
This outpatient procedure typically requires about an hour to complete and is performed under general anesthesia. Breast implants can be placed either beneath the breast tissue (subglandular) or beneath the muscle (submuscular, subpectoral). They are inserted through small incisions. The choice of incisions includes:
- Inframammary: in the crease where the breast meets the chest
- Periareolar: along the lower border of the areola
Breast Implant Revision
If you have breast implants and are considering a change or improvement, Dr. Edwards is one of the nation's leading authorities on breast implant revision surgery. There are a number of reasons for implant revision. They include:
- Exchanging older implants for a newer, more aesthetically pleasing style
- Moving implants from above or below the muscle to a new site
- Repositioning implants to a higher position on your chest
- Complications with your current implants

Breast Augmentation With Fat Transfer
Autologous fat transfer — taking fat from one area of your body and using it to augment another area — is a safe, established procedure that is becoming increasingly popular for breast surgery. Fat transfer, which is also called fat grafting, is a 3-step procedure that includes extracting fat using liposuction, processing the fat to remove contaminants, and then artfully reinjecting the purified fat cells to augment breasts.
If you are considering breast augmentation using fat injections, it's important to note that the procedure is typically limited to women who are seeking to minimally enhance the size of their breasts. Usually, fat transfer is used for increases of 1 bra cup size. Your surgeon may recommend a combination of fat transfer with implants, especially if you don't have enough breast tissue to adequately camouflage the implants.
Do I Need a Breast Lift With My Augmentation?
Implants change the size of your breasts, but won't elevate them or make them appear perkier. If your breast skin and tissue is stretched from weight gain or pregnancy, your breasts may sag to some degree. There are varying degrees of breast ptosis, or sagginess. The degree is measured by noting where the central point of your nipple is in relation to the crease where your breast meets your chest wall. This is measured during your consultation and Dr. Edwards or Dr. Higgins will discuss the possibility of combining a breast lift with your augmentation.
How Is Breast Augmentation Performed?
Breast augmentation is typically an outpatient procedure with general anesthesia administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist. The procedure takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes to complete.
Once the initial incision is made, your surgeon will create a pocket above or partially below the chest muscle, where your implant will be placed. The pocket allows for proper positioning of the implant centered behind your nipple. Once the implants are in proper position, your plastic surgeon may place a numbing medication into the pocket, close the incisions with sutures, then cover the incisions with surgical dressings. Typically, the sutures do not have to be removed.
What Can I Expect During Recovery?
Today's surgical techniques make recuperation after breast augmentation faster and more comfortable than ever. Although your precise timeline will vary based on the specifications of your surgery, most women who have breast enhancement with breast implants at our Las Vegas practice take about 7-10 days off work. This gives you ample time to rest comfortably at home while your incisions are healing. During this time, it's important to avoid lifting anything over 10 pounds and to refrain from certain activities for 6 weeks, such as driving.
You are encouraged to walk the day of your surgery, drink plenty of liquids, and take your pain medication as needed. You will need extra help around the house for several days. It is helpful to have several button-down tops on hand, because lifting clothing over your head may be uncomfortable.
Your bra and dressings will be removed at your first postoperative office visit. Within about a week, you will be instructed to perform implant massage if you have smooth implants.
In the longer term, you'll need to put off strenuous exercise, especially upper body workouts, until your surgeon clears you to resume that kind of activity.
Most of our patients in Las Vegas find that their breast implants make their breasts appear swollen and high on the chest for some time following surgery. This is normal and will gradually resolve as your tissues stretch and become accustomed to the presence of the implants. This process is often referred to as the implants "settling," and a more natural look usually takes a couple of months to fully develop. Soon, you'll be able to enjoy your enhanced figure, which will last for many years.

Speaking from Experience
"In most cases, I use the inframammary location for breast augmentation surgery. I can create a more precise pocket, which I feel yields a better long-term position and result. Most surgeons agree that the location provides good control in placement of the implants and the incision is well-camouflaged." – Dr. Michael Edwards
