Debunking Liposuction Myths
If you don’t love your “love handles” or if you’d prefer to carry tote bags on your shoulders rather than “saddlebags” on your hips, you may want to pursue the benefits of having liposuction surgery.
This common body procedure suctions fat from specific areas of your body like your neck, buttocks, thighs, hips, knees, arms or abdomen. It shapes and contours these troublesome areas that collect fat deposits, and it creates a more aesthetically pleasing body shape. However, many myths are associated with this safe, reliable procedure, mostly by the media and the general public, that we’d like to address right here. Let’s set the record straight on these common liposuction myths, shall we?
Top 5 Liposuction Myths Debunked
Myth #1: Liposuction is a miraculous way to go from fat to fit.
This is one of the major myths that you may have heard or read about liposuction. This procedure is not a way to drop 80 pounds, nor is it a quick way to become fit and healthy. What it does extremely well is remove stubborn fat deposits, and it contours your body by removing unattractive, lumpy collections of fat under the skin. If you need to lose a lot of weight, talk to your doctor about a fitness routine and diet that will work best for you. If you’re looking for surgical options, discuss bariatric surgery with your primary care doctor. Either way, after you’ve lost the weight, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons can help you with any left-over stubborn fat while also taking care of the loose skin that didn’t bounce back after surgery.
Myth #2: You can get rid of cellulite with liposuction.
Cellulite, also called orange-peel or cottage cheese due to its appearance, is a collection of fat deposits especially noticeable in the thigh or buttock area. The skin looks dimpled or bumpy because fat cells are pushing up against the connective tissue. In many cases, liposuction can improve the look of cellulite, but it cannot remove it. There are many products out there that claim to get rid of cellulite, but it’s important to discuss these products and devices with a physician before trying them as most of them don’t actually provide any results.
Myth #3: Once you’ve had liposuction, your skin will sag where the fat was removed.
In most cases, your skin will snap back to the tightness it had prior to liposuction. If your skin is tight now, it will be tight after surgery. If it’s loose now, it will be loose after surgery. Ask your aesthetic plastic surgeon what options you have for further body sculpting or skin reduction, especially if you’ve had a major weight loss causing excess skin. We have skin tightening options here at our Las Vegas plastic surgery clinic, and many patients will get liposuction with a combination skin tightening treatment (such as removing belly fat via liposuction with a combination tummy tuck surgery).
Myth #4: You won’t gain weight after liposuction.
It’s true that liposuction removes a portion of your fat cells, but it does not remove all of them. The fat cells that remain after the liposuction treatment can plump up and expand if a healthy diet and regular exercise are not part of your lifestyle. However, there’s still good news! Once those fat cells are removed through liposuction, they will never return.
Myth #5: Liposuction is not considered surgery.
Liposuction incisions are quite small and the procedure may be performed on an outpatient basis, but it is still a surgical procedure. Although recovery time is usually very quick, it’s important to follow your physician’s recovery guidelines for best results.
