What Causes Hair Loss in Women?
Women lose their hair for several reasons, but the good news is that it doesn’t have to be permanent. If you are losing your hair, you can seek treatment from a skilled dermatologist or surgeon for hair loss caused by three conditions androgenetic alopecia, aclopecia areata and telogen affluvium.
The most common reason that women lose their hair is because of a condition called androgenetic alopecia. The female body produces much more of the female hormone estrogen than the male hormone. Sometimes, the balane shifts which can result in hair loss or thinning. This results in the incrased production of the hormone DHT, which causes you t begin losing hair.
The autoimmune disorder “alopecia areata” causes patchy bald spots to develop over your scalp. The disorder provokes your immune system to attack your hair follicles, leading to hair loss. Sometimes the hair grows back on its own. Other times, the condition spreads and you lose all of your hair in a condition known as “alopecia totalis.” Luckily, a well trained dermatologist can diagnose and treat this condition.
The environment can also be responsible for your hair loss. Telogen Effluvium occurs after you experience stress. Stressors can include emotional and/or physical stress as well as stress to the hair follicles.
Each strand of hair goes through three different stages: the growing phase, the transitional phase, and the resting phase. The resting phase is known as the “telogen phase” when the hair follicles start to fall out. If your body experiences a period of stress, you can begin to lose a large amount of hair all at once and prematurely. Sometimes it can even take 3-4 months after a stressful experience to lose hair, so don’t discount stress as a contributing factor to your hair loss if you aren’t currently feeling stressed.
The important point to remember is that you should not panic or worry about losing your hair. This condition can be corrected with various treatments available. A consultation with a dermatologist experienced in hair loss is very important.
