Saline Breast Implants: The Pros and Cons
Breast augmentation surgery has been considered the most popular cosmetic procedure for more than a decade, and this holds particularly true at our Las Vegas plastic surgery practice. Many women choose this option to improve their looks and self-esteem. Whether you have finished nursing children, want to battle the effects of aging or just think you would feel better about yourself with a little enhancement, saline breast implants may be the perfect choice for you. There are a few pros and cons to consider and discuss with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons before deciding on the type of breast implants you will choose for your surgery.
Safety factors: Though it is not common, any type of breast implant carries with it the risk of leaking. Some opt for a saline breast implant because it will leak only harmless saline (the same fluid they put in IVs) that your body can easily and safely absorb. A leak is also easy to spot immediately due to the change in size that will quickly develop, allowing both patient and surgeon to act quickly. Remember, silicone implants may leak as well, although it is classically contained within the capsule your body builds around the implant.
Less expensive: Those who are on a budget may consider that a major deciding factor in favor of saline breast implants. You can expect to pay less than you would for silicone implants. However, it is always important to remember that cheaper isn’t necessarily better in any consideration of plastic surgery, so discuss your options with your board-certified plastic surgeon. They will help you determine if this is a good fit for you.
Surgical considerations: With saline implants, you can expect slightly smaller surgical incisions to be made because saline implants are not filled until after they have been inserted. No one likes the idea of having scars, but every surgery comes with an incision or scar of some kind. Our surgeons use state of the art techniques to ensure that scars are as small and inconspicuous as possible.
Lower age recommendations: While you must be at least the age of 22 to choose silicone implants by FDA recommendations, the age approved for saline implants is 18. Young women who don’t want to wait have this option; however, our bard-certified plastic surgeons will determine if you are a good candidate. Please call (702) 425-1646 to schedule a consultation, and we’ll work together to find the solution that works for you.
Aesthetic results: While the majority of women are satisfied with their saline-filled implants, some have reported some rippling through the breast tissue and skin. This can also occur with a silicone implant but is less common.
