Botox, Dysport, Xeomin: What’s the difference and why does it matter?

Plastic surgery options have evolved over the years. Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin are three of the injectables that are currently on the market to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. All three use some form of botulinum toxin type A to temporarily relax the small muscles of the face that contribute to wrinkles and other signs of aging, but there are some differences between the three.

Botox was approved in 2002 to treat frown lines, so research on safety and effectiveness is readily available. Dysport and Xeomin are relatively new, so fewer studies have been conducted; however, Dysport and Xeomin are both considered safe Botox alternatives and are regularly used by Drs. Anson, Edwards and Higgins in addition to our nurse injectors.

All three drugs are approved to improve the appearance of frown lines, the 11’s between the eyebrows and crow’s feet, but there are many off-label uses for other areas of the face and the body. Despite the similarities between the active ingredients, many patients claim to prefer one drug. To ensure that you are receiving the treatment that is right for you, you should consult with our board certified plastic surgeons and carefully examine the drug that will be used during your procedure.
