Cleanse Twice Daily Without Drying the Skin
Many aestheticians recommend adding another cleansing product to your skin care regimen during the summer. Heat causes you to sweat more, and being exposed to more substances outdoors means more dirt clogging your pores. Cleanse your skin twice daily using a cleanser suited for your skin type. Never skip your nightly cleansing ritual. While it’s always important to wash away makeup and environmental elements from your skin before bed, it’s more important during the summer months as sweat and additional time spent outdoors or in the pool with chemicals can cause skin irritation and buildup.
Exfoliate Regularly, But Choose Wisely…
Many people neglect exfoliation as the summer becomes busier. However, exfoliation is essential for removing the dead skin cells, oil and dirt that collect in pores with hotter weather. A clay or mud mask with exfoliating ingredients is a good solution and a relaxing treat to look forward to after a long, hot day. You can also use a cleansing brush to help buff away dead skin cells gently. If you use an exfoliating scrub, select one containing jojoba beads, and stay away from scrubs containing crushed walnut, sugar or salt, as these cause micro-tears in the skin that can cause irritation.
Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
Use a light moisturizer during the day, and use a deeper moisturizer at night to counteract the desert environment. Many people forget to moisturize daily during the summer because they are sweating and swimming. If you find it harder to moisturize because you like the crisp and weightless feeling of a clean face, try a light moisturizer with minimum SPF 30 so you don’t have to apply two separate products.
Apply and Reapply Sunscreen
Apply sunscreen to any exposed area of skin. Remember the backs of your ears and your toes. Use a sunscreen lip balm for your lips. When choosing a sunscreen, be sure to pick one with SPF 30 protection or higher. It should be waterproof and should protect against UVA as well as UVB rays. Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before you go outdoors and every two hours after that or more often if you swim or sweat. Since most people only apply about half as much sunscreen as they should, be liberal when applying it. Use retinol? Retinol is considered safe during the summer as long as you refrain from excessive sun exposure and wear SPF 30 daily.
Remember, even tanning is bad for your skin and can open you up to premature aging and skin cancer.
