Silicone Breast Implants: The Pros and Cons

silicone breast implants las vegasWe recently posted about the pros and cons of using saline breast implants. Here in our Las Vegas practice, we offer both saline and silicone implants for our breast augmentation patients, and we want you to make the best decision for yourself.

Silicone implants have surged in popularity in recent years for a number of reasons. Here’s a quick overview of the most significant pros and cons of this popular choice.

Pros of Silicone Breast Implants:

Silicone Breast Implants Feel More Natural

Today’s silicone implants are filled with a cohesive gel that is incredibly effective at mimicking the way real breast tissue feels and moves. Because most patients say they value a “natural” result, these newer silicone implants have seen a boom in popularity.

Aesthetic Results of Silicone vs Saline

Just as silicone implants feel more natural than saline options, they look more natural, too. Additionally, silicone implants have been shown to be less likely to “bottom out” — a complication that occurs when the implant migrates downward from its original placement and distorts the results.

Silicone Breast Implant Options

In response to higher patient demand, implant manufacturers offer a wealth of options for creating a completely personalized outcome for each patient. These options include a variety of choices regarding implant shape and profile.

Improved Safety of Silicone Breast Implants

“Cohesive” is the operative word when referring to today’s cohesive silicone gel implants. Although implants are reliably durable, in the very unlikely case of a rupture or tear, the silicone filling stays put and doesn’t escape the breast capsule. The implants generally retain their shape and don’t pose any threat to the patient while she waits to see her doctor for revisionary surgery.

The Cons of Silicone Breast Implants

Past Safety Concerns of Silicone Breast Implants

In 1992, the FDA put a moratorium on silicone implants, citing insufficient evidence of their safety. Over the next few years, silicone implants were redeveloped and extensively tested to comply with the FDA’s rigorous standards. More than a decade later, in 2006, the FDA lifted its ban. Although people have been wary of silicone implants, today’s versions have proven themselves to be quite safe, and their long list of “pros” makes them the more popular choices among today’s patients. This “con” is really more of a myth.
