Reasons for a Breast Augmentation Revision Surgery

Learn more about breast augmentation surgery at our Las Vegas plastic surgery practice

Breast augmentation revision surgery is a procedure performed on women who have previously undergone breast augmentation, reduction, reconstruction, or mastopexy. There are many reasons why a woman selects this second treatment at our Las Vegas plastic surgery practice.

Leaking or Ruptured Implants

Breast implants are not designed to last forever, as explained in this blog post: Do Your Breast Implants Have an Expiration Date? If you have had implant surgery, it is advised to periodically see a board-certified plastic surgeon who can examine you and review any questions or concerns you may have. Sometimes a leaks can occur to the shells of an implant. If the implant is filled with saline, your breast will lose volume. If it is filled with silicone, you may not notice a change and have what is referred to as a silent leak. The FDA recommends a woman with silicone implants have period breast MRI exams to evaluate the integrity of the implant. It is important to be vigilant and check-in with your plastic surgeon on a regular basis and uncover possible problems and solutions that may occur over time. Scheduling and keeping these follow-up appointments will ensure that you catch any potential issues before they become a more difficult problem.

Capsular Contracture

Following breast augmentation, a capsule of tissue naturally forms around an implant. A contracture occurs as the capsule becomes tight and possibly thickened, which squeezes and deforms the implant. When this happens, you may notice a tight feeling and an odd shaped appearance. While most skilled, board-certified plastic surgeons use methods to help prevent this from happening, it sometimes still occurs despite best efforts. A second surgery may be needed to fix this problem. Your plastic surgeon will send you home with specific instructions on how to help prevent this from happening again, so be sure to follow all aftercare instructions thoroughly.

Mal-positioned Implants

Once an implant has been placed by a plastic surgeon, there may sometimes be asymmetry in the healing process occurring over time. It could also have been a poorly performed initial surgery done by an inexperienced surgeon who isn’t a board-certified plastic surgeon. You can also avoid this complication by seeing a board-certified plastic surgeon for your first surgery.

Re-sizing

When you get implants, you are not always completely sure how they will look after healing. You may have opted for a bust size that is too large for your frame, or you may have cautiously proceeded with implants that were not large enough for you liking. While a skilled plastic surgeon will be able to help guide you through the decision process before selecting a size for you, it is possible, through augmentation revision surgery, to go up or down to your ideal size if you’re unsatisfied with your original results or have had lifestyle changes that have prompted a desire to change the size.

Plastic surgery gives you the opportunity to make changes to your body to provide the look you want with natural-looking results. However, if you have opted for breast surgery in the past, the outcome may not have been completely satisfactory or your body may have gone through changes. Breast augmentation revision gives you the power to improve results.
