Do Gummy Bear Breast Implants Last Longer?

Do Gummy Bear Breast Implants Last Longer?

They say that diamonds are forever. That may be true, but breast implants aren’t made from diamonds. Unfortunately, they may not last forever.

If you’re considering a breast augmentation in Las Vegas, you’re probably aware of the types of implants that are currently available: saline and silicone. The FDA approved cohesive gel implants in 1996 and a few years later approval of a more highly cohesive silicone gel implant nicknamed the ‘gummy bear’ because of a similarity to the feel of the popular candy. Gummy bear implants are the firmest of the implants available with the goal being to decrease the risk of visible rippling through your thin tissues. Silicone implants feel more natural than saline implants and are considered more popular as a result.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons will often recommend replacing saline and silicone implants after 10 to 15 years. The implants are not guaranteed to be lifetime devices and preventative care should be considered. If an implant were to develop a crack in the silicone shell, this is another reason to replace them. Other than at surgery, this is determined by a breast MRI which the FDA recommends you have 3 years after your surgery and every 2 years thereafter. An implant that has this crack in the shell can be managed by a board-certified plastic surgeon and replaced. You may opt to change the size or type of implant at that time. Gummy bear (highly cohesive) implants have been safely used in Europe, Canada and South and Central America for more than a decade. They were approved for use in the United States in 2012 after proper clinical studies.

If you’re interested in discussing your options for breast enhancement, our board-certified plastic surgeons are available for a consultation. Call (702) 425-1646 for an appointment and discuss your options with Dr. Michael Edwards or Dr. Terry Higgins. After we perform a focused medical evaluation, discuss your desired outcome, and set realistic expectations, you’ll be able to decide (with the help of your plastic surgeon) the kind of breast implant that is right for you.
