Silicone Breast Implant Safety: What Does the FDA Say?

silicone breast implant safety

If you are looking to enlarge your breasts or regain volume after childbirth, breast augmentation with or without a breast lift is the most commonly requested surgery performed at our Las Vegas plastic surgery practice. You have the option of having silicone or saline implants, so it’s important to understand the proven safety record of both of these implants.

What does the FDA say about silicone breast implant safety? Las Vegas plastic surgeons explain…

Silicone and saline-filled implants are the current Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved implants available in the United States. During the early 90s, the FDA restricted the use of silicone due to concern over their safety. After 14 years of clinical study the FDA determined that silicone in fact was safe for breast augmentation and removed the ban in February 2006. Both Dr. Edwards and Dr. Higgins were involved in the study referred to as the Adjunct Study to verify this safety. According to the FDA, women who are 22 years old or older as well as those who have a need for breast reconstruction are approved for the surgery as long as a thorough consultation is conducted by a physician who has completed the requisite training under the FDA guidelines who determines that she is a good candidate.

What are silicone breast implants?

If you and your plastic surgeon select silicone, then your implant will contain medical-grade silicone gel. Most breast implant patients at our Las Vegas practice prefer silicone because the gel feels more natural than saline breast implants, in fact you can read about our newest silicone implant. The procedure is typically completed under general anesthesia with a board-certified anesthesiologist and is completed in under 1 hour of operative time.

Breast Implant Procedure Overview

After the administration of anesthesia, one of our board-certified plastic surgeons will make the necessary incisions to place the implants. The incisions’ size and location will be discussed with you prior to surgery and is based on your breast shape and position and the size and style of implant you’ve selected. Breast implants can be placed either partially under the chest muscle (dual plane technique) or above the muscle (sub-glandular) and this will be determined at the time of your consultation.

Are you a candidate for breast augmentation?

To be a candidate for breast augmentation surgery, or augmentation mammoplasty, you’ll need to be in good physical health and your breasts should be fully developed. If you have recently had a child you will be asked to wait at least 3 months after cessation of breast feeding to allow the milk to dry up and to allow your breast tissue to shrink to better determine the needs of the augmentation surgery. You are also a candidate if you are unhappy with your breast appearance and feel that they are too small, misshapen or if one breast is larger than the other (asymmetric).

During a consultation, you will work with one of our Las Vegas board-certified plastic surgeons to go over your medical history; medications and supplements you’re currently taking; and a focused medical exam will be performed. During this consultation our surgeons will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for breast implants and what will be required to help you reach your goals.
