Cosmetic Rhinoplasty vs. Functional Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty (Greek for “nose shaping”), is a fairly widespread form of plastic surgery: according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, nearly a quarter million Americans underwent the procedure in 2012 alone, accounting for about 15% of all plastic surgery operations that year.

Why Rhinoplasty? Cosmetic and Functional Reasons

Different people have different reasons for seeking out rhinoplasty. Some have it done for purely cosmetic reasons, because they’re unhappy with the shape or size of their noses and want a change. A reshaped and recontoured nose may leave you feeling better about your appearance, giving you a new shot of confidence in your life.

But for many, there are medical reasons for wanting rhinoplasty, as well. For example, injuries to the nose can make it hard to breath. A deviated septum, where the wall between your nostrils is displaced, blocking airflow in and out of half your nose, can be corrected by a plastic surgeon.

Rhinoplasty is usually a very safe procedure. Regardless of why you’re thinking about rhinoplasty, however, it’s important to first consult a qualified surgeon, who can make an educated judgment as to whether the procedure is right for you and tell you what to do as you prepare for the operation.
